Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon Sound hardware supports wireless CD-quality audio

The S5 and S3 Sound Platforms are the most recent additions to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Sound portfolio.

The new hardware is intended to improve the performance of wireless audio devices by allowing for higher quality and shorter latency, resulting in a more premium sound experience.

Qualcomm is well-known for its work in powering mobile devices and pushing 5G, but it’s frequently forgotten that it also provides connections for other wireless devices, such as headphones.

The new technology will handle CD-quality audio – 16-bit 44.1kHz – wirelessly, allowing customers to take advantage of the greater availability of better-resolution music from services like Tidal, Apple Music, or Amazon Music. The aptX Lossless codec, which was announced in 2021, can be used for this.

Qualcomm claims that it will also allow wireless 24-bit 96kHz audio, upping the quality.
Audio quality has been improving in recent years, thanks to the increased bandwidth provided by faster 4G and 5G connections, which means mobile consumers don’t have to worry as much about data usage and can instead enjoy the improved streaming performance.

Reduced latency and enhanced microphone capture allow for more lifelike conversations, while the newest Snapdragon platforms now offer wireless stereo recording using headset mics, providing even another avenue for better audio capture.

While the Qualcomm Snapdragon S5 Sound Platform is unlikely to appear, the Snapdragon Sound branding, which Qualcomm uses as an umbrella word for its audio solutions, may appear.

Qualcomm’s hardware is used in audio products by companies like Master & Dynamic, Audio-Technica, Jabra, and Cambridge Audio to deliver a high-quality sound experience.

Qualcomm claims that their new technology consumes 20% less power while achieving a 25% reduction in latency.
